Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about our charity insurance products.

Why do I need charity insurance?

Each charity has its own specific risks and needs. In some cases, charities have been sold the same standard package of business insurance that everyone else has, wrongly believing that the perils were the same. Whether you’re faced with an injured volunteer, an unhappy service user or a trustee accused of negligence, you need to protect your organisation against the unexpected.

What charity insurance do I need?

If you employ staff or volunteers – whether full-time or part-time – it’s likely that some form of insurance is a legal requirement. Employers’ liability insurance and public liability insurance are usually fundamental covers for charities, but you may require other covers as well to adequately protect your organisation. There are many questions to consider: does your charity have a website? Do you run events? Perhaps you own or lease vehicles? We would advise that you talk to a charity insurance expert in the first instance.

What does public liability insurance cover?

Public liability insurance can cover you for legal costs and compensation payouts if your organisation is blamed for injuring a third party or damaging their property. Accidents can and will happen. Should you be sued for injury or death, the consequences for your charity could be catastrophic. We’ll make sure you have the right cover in place so your organisation is properly protected against compensation claims and legal costs.

What types of charity do you insure?

We are vastly experienced in supporting all types of Third Sector organisations. They include charities, community groups, social enterprises and not-for-profit organisations, typically delivering services in the following areas:

  • Animal centres/rescues
  • Children and young people
  • Disability
  • Environment and conservation
  • Hospices
  • Health and medical
  • Homelessness and social welfare
  • Elderly
  • Overseas aid and development
  • Religion
  • Sensory impairment

Is insurance a legal requirement for charity events?

No. However, it’s important to consider public liability insurance to cover you for the risks involved in running a charitable event. Furthermore, if you have staff or volunteers working for you, it’s likely that you’re legally required to have employers’ liability insurance.

Is a bespoke insurance policy more expensive than a standard product?

Tailoring a package of insurance solutions to your needs does not necessarily mean that you will have to pay more than you do now. The most important thing is that the cover is right for your specific organisation’s circumstances.

Whatever your need, we’ve got it covered.
